says going into the midterms, “it’s up to the viewers to decide what is real and what is not” when it comes to AI-generated campaign ads.
“Last Congress, there was an effort to introduce legislation, or at least pass legislation, that would put some guardrails around the use of AI in political ads,” Krebs said. “The federal government, whether it's the Federal Election Commission or others, have stepped back.”
“I think the real concern here is that it’s not any individual ad necessarily, that’s going to cause harm or great risk, it’s the cumulative effect and the erosion of trust in the process.”
