There's a fascinating Contrapoints video on conspiracies - but it's crazy long. One of the things she says is that conspiracy theorists want to have that feeling of being in on a secret, and feeling smarter than everyone else. There's a feeling of satisfaction and superiority that comes from believing in something that everyone else thinks is false. They also have to justify this belief to themselves and everyone else, and it's very hard to transition away from "I know something you don't" to "I was wrong". There's a lot more in the 2+ hour video, but that was one of my main takeaways for why conspiracies are so sticky for some people. Changing their minds is a crisis of faith they cannot allow.
